What is a CCTV sewer inspection?

A CCTV sewer inspection uses a camera — mounted on a crawler or pushed through the line — to record the interior condition of a sewer pipe, giving an engineer or owner a visual record of defects, blockages, and structural condition without excavating anything.

Inspections in North America are standardized under NASSCO's Pipeline Assessment Certification Program (PACP), which gives inspectors a common coding language for defects — cracks, root intrusion, offset joints, corrosion — along with a severity grading scale, so results from different inspectors and different projects are directly comparable rather than being a subjective narrative. That standardized defect log, timestamped against the video, feeds directly into engineering decisions: it's usually the primary evidence used to decide whether a given pipe segment needs point repair, full lining, replacement, or nothing at all. CCTV inspection is frequently a bid item in its own right — either as a pre-design condition assessment that determines the rehabilitation scope, or as a post-construction acceptance requirement to verify the finished work.
