What is a lift station (pump station)?

A lift station (or pump station) is a facility that mechanically pumps wastewater or stormwater uphill — or up to a higher-pressure main — when gravity alone can't move it to the treatment plant or the next point in the system.

A typical lift station has a wet well that collects incoming flow, submersible or dry-pit pumps, a control system, and a force main that carries flow under pressure back to a gravity line or treatment works; most municipal design standards require duty and standby pumps plus emergency power or bypass pumping capability, since a lift station failure is a direct path to a sanitary sewer overflow. Lift station rehabilitation and replacement — pumps, controls, and the wet well structure itself — is a recurring, standalone bid category distinct from pipe or main rehabilitation work, and it's often the single largest mechanical and electrical equipment line item on a water or wastewater project.
