What is sliplining?

Sliplining is a trenchless rehabilitation method that restores a damaged pipe by pulling or pushing a new, slightly smaller-diameter liner pipe inside it, then grouting the space between the two — effectively creating a pipe within a pipe.

It's one of the oldest and simplest trenchless rehabilitation techniques, typically installed from existing manholes without open-cut excavation along the pipe's length; liners are commonly HDPE, PVC, or fiberglass-reinforced plastic, chosen based on pipe size and the specific structural and chemical demands of the application. Because sliplining reduces the pipe's internal diameter — the new liner has to be smaller than the host pipe to fit inside it — hydraulic capacity has to be checked before it's selected as the rehabilitation method, which is why it's more common on pipes with spare capacity than on lines already near their design limit. Installation is governed by ASTM F585 and related standards, and unlike CIPP, service line connections generally can't be reinstated remotely from inside the pipe — they have to be excavated and reconnected separately, which adds cost and time the bid needs to account for.
